چکیده

The evaporation of inertial confinement fusion first wall materials from unattenuated pellet X-rays and from radiation emitted by a cavit.y buffer qas is examined. The low vapor pressure and low X-ray attenuation coefficient of carbon give it a lower erosion rate than stainless steel, despite the larger thermal conductivity of Type 316 stainless steel. For the argon buffer gas containing 0.2% Na and pellet yield used in this study, a gas density greater than 0.3 torr (O'C) is required to prevent evaporative erosion of a carbon first wall. A gas density greater than 0.9 torr (O'C) is needed to prevent erosion of a stainless steel wall.

UWFDM-1394 Structural Materials Damage in Fusion and Fission Systems

Calculations were performed to quantify the damage parameters in the leading candidate structural and plasma facing materials when used in magnetic and inertial confinement fusion systems and when irradiated in fission reactors. The structural materials considered are ferritic steel, austenitic steel, vanadium alloy and SiC/SiC composite. Plasma facing materials included beryllium, tungsten, an...

New critical assessments of chamber and wall response to target implosion in inertial fusion reactors

The chamber walls in inertial fusion energy (IFE) reactors are exposed to harsh conditions following each target implosion. Key issues of the cyclic IFE operation include intense photon and ion deposition, wall thermal and hydrodynamic evolution, wall erosion and fatigue lifetime, and chamber clearing and evacuation to ensure desirable conditions prior to next target implosion. Several methods ...

Thermal Effects and Erosion Rates from X - Ray Energy Deposition in Icf Reactor First Walls

The deposition of x-ray energy resulting from the microexplosion i.o an inertial confinement fusion reactor and the subsequent thermal response of candidate wall coating and structural materials is examined. Evaporation losses and resulting melt layer thicknesses for these materials exposed to a variety of different x-ray energies and spectra are calculated. Softer x-ray energy spectra absorbed...

The Interaction of Helium and Displacement Damage in Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactors

Helium is thermodynamically insoluble in metals and tends to form cavities if the conditions are appropriate for its migration. The processes of helium migration and interaction with point defects are strongly influenced by the level and the mode of displacement damage production. In this paper, we present an application of the rate theory for helium cavity formation in Inertial Confinement Fus...
